Let’s be honest — many of us cringe at the idea of abstinence because of how it’s been presented in religious spaces, especially within Abrahamic traditions. The doctrine of “purity” has too often distorted the conversation around sex, leading to sexual repression on one end and sexual rebellion on the other.
But what if abstinence wasn’t about shame or punishment from a god in the sky?
What if abstinence was a spiritual technology — a tool for power, protection, and creation?
Not something you do out of fear… but something you choose because you’re learning to harness your life force — your sexual energy — with wisdom and intention.
Recently, I shared a post on Facebook about the regret I felt after breaking a 3-year abstinence practice. The response was full of shame-laced comments: “I hope God forgives me,” or “I broke mine too, I feel so guilty.” And I realized — we need to have a deeper conversation. One rooted not in guilt, but in healing and empowerment.
This episode is spiritually guided by Oyeku Meji, an Odu that speaks to wealth, family, peace, and protection. Oyeku warns us against behaviors that drain our life force and lead to premature death — and few things do that more silently than the misuse of sexual energy.
